250 WALK THE CIRCLE AT TAI CHI FARM
Walking the circle June 1999, Warwick New York, over 250 people gathered in the field at Tai Chi Farm during the last Zhan San Feng Festival held on the property to walk the circle with Heaven Palm in memorial of the late Master Jou, Tsung Hwa. Dr. John Painter led the huge circle that took up most of the 50-acre area. This was the largest gathering of individuals to ever walk the circle in the United States or China to date. Following the festival, Jiulong Baguazhang Instructors and students from China, Canada and the United States attended a five day retreat featuring Wind palm, Baguazhang Sword and the Long Feng Shui, Wind and Water Jiulong Qigong methods.

FOUNDERS DAY CELEBRATION
Arlington Texas was recently the side of the 419th birthday of the Li Family system of Daoqiquan internal health and martial arts. Students from around the world gathered in Arlington to celebrate the founders' day ceremony of drinking tea, renewing the four virtues of the art and placing flowers on the ancestors place.

Master Jou, Tsung Hwa also honored.
This year a photo of the late Master Jou, Tsung Hwa was also added to the ancestors place as a sign of respect and honor. Although not his teacher, it was Master Jou, a long time friend of Dr. Painter that had encouraged him to begin openly teaching Jiulong Baguazhang and promoting the internal arts of Daoqiquan. Master Jou, who was killed last year in an automobile accident had openly told Americans and Chinese masters alike that the Jiulong Baguazhang system was the most complete method of Baguazhang he had seen including those in China.

ABOUT DAOQIQUAN (Tao Ch'i Ch'uan)
Daoqiquan is the name given to the family style of internal Chinese martial arts created in the year 1580 by a Tibetan Lama turned Daoist. His Tibetan name was Lama Zurdwang. The Lama after leaving Tibet migrated to China to study internal development methods for self- cultivation. He studied at Emei Mountain and in Daoist retreats for over 20 years.

It is said he found Chinese martial arts especially the sword much to his liking and that he reasoned that by practice of correct virtues and discipline one could attain spiritual enlightenment and energy through martial practices.

Zurdwang who took the Chinese name of Dao, Yueh-long is reputed to have come to live with the Li family as an instructor. Dao, Yueh-long became a teacher of the Li Family in Daofu China, Sichuan Province. Here he taught the family, Poetry, Painting, Meditation, Herbology and his martial art concepts of the Five Circles, Six Stances, Snake Boxing, Heron Boxing and Four Virtues.

From this beginning the Li Clan developed into well known bodyguards who distinguished themselves along China's Silk Road. As the years past patriarchs of the family add other methods to the original practice. A few of these past masters are:

Li, Zhang - Fu 1739 - 1829. Studied traditional Xingyiquan internal martial art. From this he developed a method founded a new form called Lightning fist on Xingyiquan principles.

Li, Ren - Ma 1801 - 1913. Developed a combat method known as the Liu Taijiquan style by combining Chen and Yang Taijiquan styles with the six styles and five circles of his ancestors.

Li, Zhang - Lai 1850 - 1946. Developed Nine Dragon Baguazhang from his cousin Li, Ching - Yuen's Daoist method of Baguazhang after living with him at Emei Mountain. He also created the Li Family Standing Qigong and their powerful Tzu Jan Te : Natural Style Xingyiquan boxing.

Li, Long Dao 1880 - 1980. Created the Li family 5 internal animal style the eighteen-fist method Daoqiquan. He was a master of Xingyiquan and Baguazhang edged weapons and firearms. Li, Longdao immigrated to the US and was the master who taught Dr. John Painter his skill after his sons who had become "westernized" refused to learn the family arts.

Jiulong found to improve vascular circulation. The following information in excerpted from Dr. Painter's forth-coming book. Baguazhang Qigong and Health.© All information in this article is copyrighted under international law.

Once oxygen, nutrient laden blood has deposited it's life giving substances to the cells and tissues of our body it proceeds into the blood vascular system seeping through the small capillaries, exchanging oxygen, nutrients, and waste products between blood and tissue cells. By the time blood reaches this point most of the pressure of the hearts contractions and arterial pressure has been expended. Now it must pass through venules (small veins) joining to become larger veins in the venous system whose job it is to return it to the heart for re-circulation. The venous system has the important job of returning the fluid to the heart, lungs and other organs to pick up a fresh load of life giving nutrients. The more efficiently and quickly this is accomplished the better one's entire system functions. The major contributing actions responsible for these return actions are: -

1.ONE WAY VALVES.
A series of unidirectional (one-way) valves located along the walls of the veins. These prevent the back flow of blood.

2.MUSCULAR CONTRACTION.
External and internal muscular contraction helps to squeeze the vessels and drive blood along the venous system upward toward the heart in the legs and thoracic cavity. Contraction of the external abdominal muscles will also cause blood in the abdominal veins to move upward toward the heart. Baguazhang has been found to incorporate a very unique flexing of the torso that facilitates and improves this type of circulation.

3.RESPIRATION.
Respiratory movements especially the rhythmic abdominal breathing used in Jiulong Baguazhang has also shown to adequately increase abdominal and intra-thoracic pressure during aspiration. The downward pressure forces blood in abdominal veins upward towards the heart there by hastening the return circulatory process.

4.THE VENOUS FOOT PUMP.
Recently Dr. Michael Gardner and medical researcher Roger Fox brought a fifth method of increasing the venous flow to the attention of the medical community.

The pair working in England with paralyzed patients subjects suffering from thrombosis and other related lower limb disorders discovered the "Plantar Heart Pump mechanism:" Medical science has for some time known that the action of walking or running aids in the return circulation through the venous system. No one had suspected that under the arch of the foot covered by the plantar fascia was a bio- mechanical pump activating an entire system of deep veins responsible for the re-circulation of venous blood to the heart. The pump consists of a collection of veins composed of the external and internal plantar veins united with the posterior tibial vein joined by the peroenal veins. This pump is responsible for dramatically increasing venous blood flow in the lower extremities.

Walking, not running in a manner that allows the heel to touch down first with the weight of the body rolling over the arch of the foot onto the toes will compress the Plantar heart pump in the feet in the most efficient manner. The method of walking used in some styles of Baguazhang acts as a most effective stimulation to this area. Test results using their theory have yielded remarkable results in healing and the prevention of thrombosis.

Paralyzed patients and patients suffering from fractures of the tibia were placed on a machine which flexed the feet in the correct way. The results in the words of Roger Fox were. "Astounding we never realized this bio-mechanical pump existed."

JIULONG QIGONG CIRCLE WALKING ACTIVATES FOOT PUMP.
Tests by Dr. Eugene Pope MD. and Dr. John Painter Ph.D. ND. at the Life Science Institute using the Jiulong Baguazhang exercise of walking the circle have shown that not only does the venous flow improve but also the arterial flow to the feet and legs increases when the walking style is correctly applied.

This produces an overall increase in oxygen and nutrient exchange by the tissues and promotes more effective circulation in general throughout the entire system. More circulation means better oxygen and nutrient exchange and waste toxin elimination within the total circulation system. This of course translates into improved health, stamina and fitness throughout the entire body.

Baguazhang Walking for Health.
To really effectively activate the Plantar Heart Pump in walking the heel of the foot should touch town first with the toes arched upward slightly. As you roll the weight forward on to the arch of the foot it needs to be allowed to flatten against the ground and then flex upward from the middle as the weight is transferred to the ball of the foot and toes.

Walking in shoes that do not allow the foot to flex or shoes that have a high instep prevents correct pumping action from taking place. Therefore it is recommended that for best stimulation of the Plantar Heart Pump comfortable shoes with no arch supports be worn.

All walking exercises should be performed on a firm but never hard surface. The ideal surfaces are thick grass, or sand. Second best surfaces are gym mats, followed by thick pile carpeting over a wooden floor. Do not practice this exercise on concrete or hard unyielding surfaces as damage to the ankle, instep or knee cartilage may result.

GOMPA HERBOLOGY.

ASTRAGALUS.
Astragalus ranaceus. Harvested from the wild in Northern China. Astragalus is known as an Adaptogen-tonic. One of the most important of the Chinese medicinal herbs, Astragalus is said to be a powerful Qi development tonic that increases function of the immune system. It can be alternated with Korean Ginseng in conditions of stress, fatigue and for rebuilding the body following illness. Today most standard health food chains and some supermarkets that carry herbs stock Astragalus.
