The ancient image is of five men competing for the affection of one woman who is strong willed. She will make a difficult wife and strife may arise from competing with old friends for her. The Gua is associated with the fifth month just after the equinox, when yang energy is at its highest point. At this point yang begins its decline and yin energy increases as winter approaches. This is a warning to conserve our energy. If we are wise and conserve energy during this cycle we will have some left over for the Yin time of winter. We are being warned that to squander all of our power because the weather is warm and comfortable will leave us with little when it is cold and damp. One can use this as an omen of success if one is aware to keep the concepts of heaven while the winds of change blow across us. PHILOSOPHERS DESK Dao De Jing Chapter III. To know true peace. Do not praise nor exalt the talented too much, And people will not contend for a high position. Do not collect precious objects, And people will not become thieves. Do not reflect upon things that insight desire, And your heart shall not become confused. Those who follow the Dao govern themselves by: Developing an open mind, Filling their center, Relinquishing all desire, Forging the inner character. Therefore the sage guides others by: Purging them of useless knowledge and desires, So that cunning deceivers cannot influence them. By incorporating the principle of non-attachment, All people can learn to live in peace. Commentary by Dr. Painter: Lao-Zi tells us in this chapter that to do this we must understand the principle of Wuwei or non-action. He recommends that to achieve this state of Wuwei It is necessary to begin with perfecting ourselves, becoming warriors of the heart and conquering our desires. The primary goal is to become free of desire. Such freedom allows us to develop a clear inner sight devoid of fanciful illusions with which we so often distort reality to suit our needs. He is speaking in this chapter to those who would develop their individual inner selves and also to those who would become leaders of men. Desires, attachments, and useless goals become the chains that bind the inner spirit to a narrow spectrum of existence. When the spirit is bound to worldly things so also the mind and body becomes shackled by the fetters of illusion and delusion. To be truly in harmony with the natural law of Dao which is the universal law of creation; it is necessary for man to find inner peace through freedom from attachments. Easy to say but oh so hard to do. Governs self by filling the center and forging the inner character refers to concepts of internal energy development of both Qi, life force energy and De or virtue. This can be achieved through the practice of psycho-physical forms of exercise in which the mind and body are blended into an integrated system of internal energy control. Actually the passage is drawn from the idea of building the internal power in the lower abdomen. Excerpted from: Three Secrets of the Dao De Jing by Dr. John P. Painter APOTHECARY Summer the Fire Element. The element fire, which is part of the Wuxing concept of Chinese medicine says that great energy governing the heart and small intestines, is at work during this season. Also affected will be the pericardium and triple warmer meridians, as they are also associated with the circulation of heart blood and maintenance of temperature. Chinese medicine states that our organs are regulated by the seasons and what we eat also affects the way our organ systems function. We also want to keep the body cool and not get too hot internally during the season of fire energy. So a diet of fresh fruits and salads some with bitter greens (for the heart) like endive and watercress are good additions. Avoid fried and oil saturated foods as well as heavy meats, and caffeine or alcohol during the hot time of the summer as this will over stimulate the liver energy. I recommend the use of Cayenne pepper (Capsicum annum) during summer as it promotes sweat and helps to clean the pores of the skin. It is also know to deter mosquitoes if eaten regularly. I remember fondly my Jalapeno pepper eating contests with Master Liang, Shou-Yu in Houston and Virginia. Ginger is also a great herb for memory and vigor during the summer months. IN THE NEWS.
