IN THIS ISSUE * Daoqiquan Birthday Celebration * Gompa Herbology Study at the Gompa * Upcoming Workshops in your area of the country FOUNDERS DAY CELEBRATIONS Students from around the world gathered in Arlington to celebrate the founders' day ceremony of drinking bitter tea, renewing the four virtues of the art and placing flowers on the ancestors' place this last October 3rd. Each year students gather at the home Kwoon to celebrate and renew old friendships with fellow brothers and sisters in the Daoqiquan system. ABOUT DAOQIQUAN (Tao Ch'i Ch'uan) Daoqiquan is the name given to the family style of Chinese martial arts created in the year 1580 by a Tibetan Lama turned Daoist. His Tibetan name was Zurdwang. The Lama after leaving Tibet migrated to China to study Daoism for self- cultivation. After studying at many temples he came to Emei Mountain and took the Chinese name of Dao, Ji-ren after which he is reputed to have come to live with the Li family as an instructor. He became a teacher of the Li family in Daofu China, Sichuan Province. Here he taught the family, Poetry, Painting, Meditation, Herbology and his martial art concepts of the Five Circles, Six Stances, Snake Boxing, Heron Boxing and Four Virtues. From this beginning the Li clan developed into well known bodyguards who distinguished themselves along China's Silk Road. As the years past patriarchs of the family add other methods to the original practice. Li, Zhang - Lai 1850 - 1946 developed Nine Dragon Baguazhang (Jiulong Baguazhang) from his cousin Li, Ching - Yuen's Daoist method of Baguazhang after living with him at Emei Mountain. He also created the Li family Standing Qigong and their powerful Tzu Jan Te: Natural Style Xingyiquan boxing Li, Long Dao 1880 - 1980 created was a master of Xingyiquan and Baguazhang edged weapons and firearms. Li, Long Dao immigrated to the US and was the master who taught Dr. John Painter his skill after his sons who had become "westernized" refused to learn the family arts. IN THE NEWS Inside Kung Fu Magazine To Feature Jiulong Baguazhang Study Group Leader John Adams and Dr. Painter will grace the cover of the March 2002 issue of Inside Kung Fu magazine. Don't miss the controversial article by Dr. Painter based on his studies with Li, Long Dao and research in the science of sports science in this issue on the subject of power training for internal martial arts it is sure to open some minds and raise some eyebrows in the internal martial arts community. Ohio Sheriff's office to host Jiulong Baguazhang's PKC Tactical workshop. Sergeant Rick Krausman of the Ohio Sheriff's office is a tactical trainer for law enforcement in the state of Ohio. Sergeant Krausman has been using the Jiulong concepts in training correctional officers, police, sheriff deputies and state police for the last year based on the Nine Dragon Baguazhang for Street Combat Video series. Krausman reports that he has never seen a more effective and street-wise method. The local Sheriff has been so impressed with the PKC methods that he has asked Dr. Painter to come and present a series of workshops for their officers in April of 2002. GOMPA HERBOLOGY GINGKO Gingko biloba. Used extensively throughout Europe and Asia as a vasodilator to the extremities, particularly the cerebral region. Gingko is indicated in the treatment of conditions related to poor circulation including some forms of tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo, cold extremities, memory loss and conditions related to advancing age. Ginkgo is used to improve the memory and clarity of visualization and is also indicated in helping some stroke victims with restored cerebral circulation. Today most standard health food chains and some supermarkets carry this herb in stock.
