Qi in Jiulong Baguazhang

What is Qigong?
The art of nurturing Qi in the human system is today called Qigong (Ch'i Kung). For over 2,000 years Chinese monks, martial arts masters, physicians and performers have developed literally thousands of physical and mental methods based on developing and enhancing the body's internal force.

Chinese scholars cite as many as 4000 distinctive styles of ancient and modern Qigong practice. Some are founded on philosophical traditions such as Daoism, Buddhism and Confucianism, others were developed to achieve specific results such as healing, martial power or spiritual insight.

Qigong practice can have an effect on almost everything in the body from basic biological functions and physiological factors such as hormones, blood circulation and digestion. Some of its practices can also reach into the subtlest internal faculties to cover the full spectrum of self-cultivation. One of the most characteristic attributes of Qigong is the broad range of its practical applications and its adaptability in practice.

Primary Goals of Qigong Practice:
True Qigong training is directed towards health and spiritual enlightenment not martial art skill. Qigong's martial role has traditionally been to make one healthier. With greater health and stamina one is the more capable of fighting off an attack and developing Gong Fu Quanfa (skill in boxing developed with time and patience).

Today in the west what is called Neigong (inner skill) training often becomes confused with Qigong practice. This is understandable due to the language barrier and the fact that both methods use mental visualization and physical exercises to attain their goals. Neigong is about creating subtle power from coordinating the external skeletal muscles to act with entrainment during combat and Qigong is about making the entire body healthy. Qigong is used to:

1. - Preserve health and increase longevity.

2. - Cure or prevent disease.

3. - Prolonge life.

4. - Cultivate spiritual awareness, enlightenment and liberation from the cycle of corporeal existence.
