Schools of Qigong:

Most people do not realize that there are many practices of Qigong each with its specific goals. While there are thousands of methods of Qigong practice they all evolved from roughly six basic schools of thought. Many of the concepts are shared, and some even overlap or borrow from the others. On this page we will discuss only the Daoist school. Our Gompa Website has a more detailed section of the other Chinese and Tibetan schools of Qigong and yoga practices.

Daoist Qigong:

The Daoist school of Qigong works to strengthen both the mind and body and achieve a dynamic harmony between the two. Daoists, the most varied and prolific of Qigong creators, employed a full range of techniques, such as standing and seated meditation, physical gymnastics or yoga-like exercise, nutrition, herbals and guided imagery.

Daoist methods can focus on longevity, spiritual attainment and even martial art practices. The latter focuses on improving the senses, neurological reactions while strengthening bone, tendon and muscles. Daoists developed a comprehensive system of healthcare and life extension known as Yang-sheng (to cultivate life). This system included diet and nutrition, herbs and exercise, yoga (Daoyin) and massage.

A uniquely Daoist contribution to Qigong, was the practice of harmonizing human activities with the rhythms of nature and cycles of the heavens. The idea was to harness the powers of the universe to assist in their quest for health, longevity.

The Daoist system of all the schools of Qigong practice, is the most comprehensive and diverse, it places equal emphasis on physical health and spiritual awareness. It regards a healthy body and a long life as the most essential foundation for the ultimate goal of spiritual enlightenment.
