Qi in Jiulong Baguazhang

Martial Qigong:

Zhandouli Qigong (combat effective energy work) should be more appropriately called Neigong, subtle energy skill. It borrows heavily from the Daoist and Confucian disciplines. Martial Qigong / Neigong differs from health Qigong in that Qi exercises are practiced along with martial Neigong as a method to enhance speed and power for fighting techniques. Martial Qigong is really a blend of Neigong and Qigong. Healing, spiritual awareness and longevity are not the focus of this training method.

Both internal and external schools of martial art developed methods of Qigong training designed to enhance particular skills needed in combative situations.

Martial Qigong methods resorted to physical and mental training using meditation exercises like Zhan Zhuang standing similar to those found in Yiquan (intention fist). Known as Yizhang in Jiulong Baguazhang, the martial student learns a method called Power Standing to relax tense muscles, coordinate tendons and joints and open the inner powers of the mind/body. Power Standing contains many levels from static stances to moving walking the circle. Students move from one level to the next as the ability to create Jin or physical / mental energy increases.

An ancient warrior-training manual states that a martial artist needs to have these qualities:

1 - Possess heightened awareness and eyes like an eagle.
2 - Fast reactions like those of the monkey.
3 - A strong, centered and flexible body like that of a serpent.
4 - A body able to withstand the punishment of kicks, strikes and joint locks.
5 - A mind that will remain focused and calm under stressful situations.
